Ariel Lin Dubbing for a Taiwanese Animated Film for the First Time

2011/04/07

Ariel Lin had dubbed for the heroine in the Hollywood YA movie “Herbie: Fully Loaded”. At that time she was the Chinese version of “Lindsay Lohan”.  Then she did the Korean voice over for Jeff Chang’s MV, making good use of what she had learned in college. And now, Ariel, for the first time, dubbed for the animated film “Memory Loss”, which is produced by a Taiwanese company. Anita, the heroine Ariel dubbed in the film, is more a tomboy. And Ariels low voice is very suitable for this character.

When Ariel was asked about how she transformed her voice back to a childish voice to dub the character, she answered: “For adults, words often have to go through a thinking process before coming out of their mouths. This time, after the explanation of the directors and the professional dubbing teacher, I learned to go back to my childhood when I spoke out whatever came to my mind right away without further thinking. Actually, I believe the issue of the maturity of the voice hadn’t been a problem once we decided how it should be.” “The story of ‘Memory Loss’ is very special. It is a touching story of good memories and bad ones. This movie teaches children that every memory is valuable and should be cherished! Sometimes, we think bad memories should be erased and forgotten, leaving only good ones. But that is not true. Every bad memory means something. And it has its own value. I believe ‘Memory Loss’ is a perfect film for children which can teach them something,” said Ariel.

As for the interesting things about dubbing, Ariel said: Because Anita was travelling to the Memory World from the real world, very often she had to scream.  And my voice is rather low. It was pretty hard to find the balance. But the good thing is that I myself loved to act in those situations. Therefore I could have everything under control for scenes like being bumped, and going down all the way after flying high.

The most impressive character is Randy, a small role.  Randy and Anita were classmates. He actually liked Anita. But under the pressure from Butch, he had to bully her.  This reminded me of my school days. When I was in the first or second grade of the elementary school, some boys liked me but somehow they just had to bully me by forcing me to play some bride game or something like that. Hahaha,Ariel continued. While dubbing, Ariel, who is very sensitive, even shed tears for the touching relationship between Anita and her mother! Also, Ariel didn’t forget to recommend “Memory Loss” to everyone. “This animated film is very interesting. And the story is very exciting. I hope everyone can bring kids in his family or his friends’ kids to a theater to watch this movie,” said Ariel.

Ariel was the first performing artist agreed to dub for Memory Loss and the first to walk into the recording studio for dubbing. It took 5 years to complete the film. During this period of time, Ariel found time in her tight schedule to go to the recording studio several times, following the directors instructions to try over and over in order to make everything perfect. She had been very professional. Everything, including all the efforts, Ariels hard working, tears, and smiles, made Memory Loss go beyond what it was expected! Dont forget to go to a theater to show your support for Memory Loss after May 6th. Both adults and children will be definitely be touched by this film!
